What to do now

  1. Shut off the water at the meter or isolation valve if it is safe.
  2. Keep electrics away from standing water; move people and pets if needed.
  3. Photograph the leak, blockage or heater.
  4. Do not use chemical drain cleaners on major blockages if a plumber is coming.
  5. Contact your insurer or landlord if appropriate.
